The purpose of this class is to…
• improve musical proficiency in the area of percussion performance
• expand upon knowledge and principles of music and musicianship
• provide a performance experience in percussion
• experience literature for percussion ensemble
• build musicianship through small ensemble performance
Materials…
• Black binder with page protector
• Pencils.
• Personal sticks should be labeled and in student’s personal stick bag. Miss Lusk can provide information to any students looking to purchase their own mallets.
• If a student breaks a stick or mallet, they are responsible for replacement.
Instrument Care…
• Percussion instruments are supplied.
• You are required to play all instruments as a requirement for this class.
• You are also responsible for maintaining the condition of these instruments.
• Some percussion instruments cost up to $15,000.
• IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAINTAIN THESE INSTRUMENTS.
Grading…
• 40% Class participation (Daily Grades)
• 30% Test/Quizzes
• 30% Performance/Rehearsal Attendance
Dates…
• Winter Concert December 13th 7:00PM
• All District Band Auditions January 7th
• All District Band February 3rd & 4th
• Solo & Ensemble Festival April 29th
Class Procedures…
• Entering the band room:
• When the bell rings, you will have two (2) minutes to prepare your instrument, music, and anything else your need for rehearsal.
• You should spend time before class begins to warm up and practice.
• During Class:
• There should be NO food or drink in the band room.
• There should be NO gum in the band room.
• There should be NO trash in the floor of the band room.
• The band room is your rehearsal space. Treat it as such.
• End of class:
• Put away all music, store mallets, and accessories in the correct area; and properly store all equipment.
• Students should not leave until the bell rings.
Checklist for Success…
• Here is a proven plan for success as a music student:
o A positive attitude, encouraging parents.
o Good attendance at school and music practices.
o Audition for All District Band.
o Attend honors band clinics and summer music camps.
o Practice 5 days a week, 20-40 minutes a day.
o Own good recordings of artists performing on your instrument.
o Attend band, orchestra, and professional soloist concerts.
